AbstractThis report describes a project undertaken with students in grades 5 through 7 in the Toms River (New Jersey) Regional School District to develop a technique for integrating microcomputers and VCRs (videocassette recorders). Following an overview of the program, a brief review of research on technology in the classroom is presented along with a graph of computer and video trends in public schools from 1982 to 1987. The program description includes a list of project goals and objectives, steps and a diagram for connecting computer and video equipment, a sample lesson sequence, and a summary of the research project lessons. Fourteen suggestions are made for projects and appropriate software: (1) video storybooks; (2) video plays; (3) video comic books; (4) video slide shows; (5) graphic screens; (6) character generators; (7) digitizing; (8) documentaries and presentations; (9) demonstration lessons and tutorials; (10) news programs; (11) music videos; (12) advertisements and announcements; (13) video pen pals; and (14) video greeting cards. Data from pre/posttests of vocabulary, pre/posttests of computer-video connections, a student opinion survey, and a teacher opinion survey are presented. Based on this evaluation data, it is concluded that students are capable of using computer and video equipment together and that students and teachers found the project a positive learning experience.
